Tanzanite is a high ranking gem in Blue Diamond's court. There have only been a few true tanzanite in existance, as they can only be made in a specific environment. This particular Tanzanite was specially made by Pink diamond for Blue diamond as a symbol of peace and comradery between the two. The purple-blue hue of Tanzanite symbolized this perfectly.

However, Tanzanite is more than a mere prize to Blue diamond. He is a very high ranking gem in her court due to his telepathic abilities. He is able to read the minds of others, and speak to them with his mind. If a gem is gullible enough, he is also able to 'suggest' things to them, and have them say or do certain things that may aid him. Despite this power, Tanzanite is a very weak and fragile gem. He cannot call upon a gem weapon, and he has no means to protect himself besides simply dodging out of the way. Due to this, he is assigned personal guards who's soul mission is to protect him when he is moving locations.

When Pink diamond was shattered, Blue diamond could not bear to look at the Tanzanite that was gifted to her for a while. This is one reason why Tanzanite covers his eyes with his hair. The second reason is that he believes his eyes give away too much emotion when he is reading the minds of others. Thus, his cover would be blown. Tanzanite is very loyal to blue diamond. She still looks away from him whenever he is in the same room as her, but his mind reading abilities are too useful, and his gem too rare, to call for his shattering. Tanzanite respects this opinion of himself, and makes sure his usefulness doesn't go unnoticed.
